Two Faculty Positions in Retailing and Consumer Sciences (RCSC)

Position: Assistant Professor, 9-month tenure track (60% teaching and 40% research)
Minimum qualifications: Strong scholarly interest in the retailing discipline. Ph.D. required in a field closely related to the retailing discipline, including but not limited to retailing, marketing, consumer sciences, merchandising, business, psychology, sociology, anthropology, communications, economics, geography, hospitality/tourism management, information systems or other closely related social sciences fields. Potential for, or proven success in research, university teaching, and graduate student advising.
Preferred qualifications: Demonstrated excellence in the communication and interpersonal skills necessary to be an effective instructor, mentor, and collaborator; proven success or potential ability to attract research funding. Evidence of scholarship as demonstrated by publications or potential for publishing in journals in the retailing and consumer science disciplines, strong interest in research, and willingness to pursue an aggressive research program aimed at publications in top-tier journals. Evidence of, or potential for successful grant writing, participation in national professional organizations, collegiality, and industry involvement.
Responsibilities: Effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses. Course load is typically three courses per year. Areas of interest include — but are not limited to — retail/services strategy, retail sourcing/buying (e.g., food, hard goods, soft goods, etc.), retail supply chain, retail location analysis, retail geography, consumer behavior, CRM, research methods, consumer policy, or emerging pedagogical domains in retailing. Conduct research and seek research funding in the relevant field. Publish in leading scholarly, refereed journals in the candidates’ discipline. Direct doctoral and master’s student research. Provide undergraduate and graduate student advising/mentoring. Contribute to curriculum planning and other academic affairs. Provide service at Division, School, College, and university levels as well as to professional organizations. Participate in some activities sponsored by Lundgren Center for Retailing/ Take Charge America Institute for Consumer Finance Education and Research.
RCSC program description: The mission of the RCSC Division is to deliver integrated research, educational, and outreach programs of excellence in retailing and consumer sciences that focus on effective and ethical business practices leading to consumer satisfaction and quality of life. The RCSC program offers undergraduate (B.S.) and graduate (Ph.D. and M.S.) degrees through the John and Doris Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Singapore Tourism Board Distinguished Professor in Asian Hospitality Management
The School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University is accepting applications for two tenure-track faculty members for the Singapore Tourism Board Distinguished Professorships in Asian Hospitality Management. Each professorship carries a five year renewal term.
Qualifications: Ideal candidates will currently hold the rank of associate or full professor, have an international reputation in management research, be able to communicate effectively with hospitality industry leaders, and have a strong record of teaching courses at the undergraduate, masters, Ph.D., and executive levels. A focus in hospitality or service industry issues is desired but not required. Candidate must be willing to develop expert knowledge of the international hospitality industry. There are two professorships to be filled, and the searches are not discipline specific. There will be one pool of applicants for both chairs. This search will remain open until both chairs are filled by qualified candidates. These chairs are tenure track faculty appointments at Cornell University.
Institution: The School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University is the top-ranked hospitality management program worldwide, with BS, MMH (Masters of Management in Hospitality), and Ph.D. programs. The Cornell Nanyang Institute for Hospitality Management, located in Singapore, offers executive education and an AACSB-accredited MMH degree. Important resources available to faculty include extraordinary access to industry leaders, excellent research funding, the Center for Hospitality Research (CHR), and the cultural and intellectual resources of the Cornell University community.
Responsibilities: Job responsibilities include developing and teaching graduate MMH courses in the Cornell Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management in Singapore for at least one semester each academic year. This will require a physical presence in Singapore during this semester. The other semester may be spent at Cornell University School of Hotel Administration in Ithaca, New York or in the Cornell Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management in Singapore. Over the course of five years at least 50 percent of the time will be in Singapore. The Cornell-Nanyang students spend late summer and Fall Semesters in Ithaca, and therefore faculty holding one of these chairs should be available to interact with these students in Ithaca and may also teach in the program’s core. Top-level disciplinary research is expected, as is dissemination of cutting-edge ideas and practices to hospitality executives.
