The Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services (JRCS) is pleased to announce a call for papers with the intention of publishing a special issue concerning Healthcare and Consumer in the Context of Information & Communication Technologies. This call for papers is coupled with a virtual symposium to be held in January 2007 by the Purdue Retail Institutes’ ‘Virtual Global Symposium of Consumer Sciences’ (GSCS). For more information on GSCS, and the 2007 Symposium, please visit (Hosting Institute: Purdue Retail Institute at Purdue University (PRI) @) Those presenting at the symposium are invited to submit full-length papers for consideration for the JRCS special issue if the manuscript is under the healthcare track. (Note: submissions are NOT restricted to GSCS affiliates or those presenting the symposium; this is an open call.)
Background: Impact of the Internet on Healthcare and Consumers What is a New Healthcare System and consumers for the 21st Century? The Health Information Communication Technology (HICT) is identified as a critical force that could significantly improve clinical decision-making, consumer safety, and overall quality of care. However, HICT remains largely unresearched, even though it represents an opportunity to improve access to health care and consumer welfare. Health-related e-information kiosks, e-mail communications, web-based psycho-educational programs, information search, various types of online virtual community, and electronic informed consent are being investigated, but few researchers are focusing on the specific impact of HICT on consumer acceptance and usage behavior. While much progress has been made in developing guidelines to ease the use and usefulness of ICT (i.e. Internet technologies) for retailing and marketing, still relatively little is known about the impact of the HICT and other electronic research tools in delivering consumer benefits in healthcare systems.
Researches are invited to address the following major objectives but are
not limited to:
- Study of consumer channel choices/preference among various information healthcare resources
- Study of the use of technology to disseminate health-related information to consumers and information search behavior
- Studies of the use of technology to access underserved populations
- Study of the use of technologies and how do these technologies compare in effectiveness to in-person consumer-provider interaction
- Studies using technology to test and/or compare theory-based models of consumers in healthcare
- Consumer adoption and diffusion of new health-related technologies
- Consumer value, satisfaction, repeated usage intention of using new healthcare technologies
Papers may be the results of empirical research, comprehensive literature reviews, case studies, or thoughtful analysis. However, to be accepted for publication, all manuscripts must provide practical applications for healthcare and consumers. Author’s guideline can be found on the journal homepage at:
