Resources, Capabilities, And Competitive Heterogeneity:
AOM 2006 Pre-Conference Development Workshop For Junior Scholars

A common topic in contemporary strategic management research involves the subject of competitive heterogeneity. Specifically, what are the sources of persistent performance differences among firms?  The resource-based view (RBV) has emerged as a dominant perspective for explaining persistent heterogeneous performance differences, yet it has been difficult to establish and support both conceptually and empirically. Alternative explanations have advocated dynamic  capabilities as a source of interfirm performance variation. Collectively, the strategy field still lacks a cohesive body of empirical studies providing clear and consistent evidence of the sources of inter-firm performance differences. To help advance such research, the BPS Division is sponsoring a Professional Development Workshop (PDW) at the 2006 Academy of Management conference for junior scholars doing empirical work and/or integrative reviews (e.g., meta-analyses) in the domains of the RBV, Dynamic Capabilities, and/or Competitive Heterogeneity.   The PDW will provide a forum to receive advice and feedback from colleagues and prominent scholars. Panelists / discussants for this PDW include: Thomas Brush, Glenn Hoetker, Michael Leiblein, Tammy Madsen, Cathy Maritan, Doug Miller, Thomas Mellewigt, and Laura Poppo.

Doctoral students and junior faculty are invited to submit unpublished empirical working papers examining the roles of resources and/or capabilities in interfirm performance for consideration for inclusion in the workshop. Paper submittals should following AOM guidelines, include a detailed abstract and key words, and list a rank order preference of 3 panelists with whom you prefer to discuss your work. Submissions should be sent via e-mail to Craig Armstrong (carmstrong@utsa.edu) by May 1, 2006. Authors will be notified by June 15, 2006 regarding their inclusion in the PDW and the discussant pairings. Please direct any inquiries about this PDW to its organizers:  Craig Armstrong, Paul Drnevich (dren@purdue.edu), and/or Katja Nothnagel (Katja.Nothnagel@gmx.de).
