PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT & MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION (PDMA)
OCTOBER 2006 RESEARCH FORUM

Conference Theme: CREATIVING AND APPROPRIATING VALUE IN INNOVATION MAGEMENT

CALL FOR PAPERS
Research Forum Dates: October 21-22, 2006
Research Forum Venue: Renaissance Waverly, 2450 Galleria Parkway, Atlanta, GA

The PDMA Academic Research Forum is the ONLY academic conference devoted entirely to innovation. It is a significant part of the Product Development & Management Association (PDMA) International Conference. The Research Forum will be held Saturday, October 21st through noon Sunday, October 22nd in Atlanta. A welcoming event is planned for the evening of Saturday, October 21st.

Papers using any of the acceptable research methodologies such as surveys, case studies, modeling, and others and using data from all corners of the globe are welcome. We welcome competitive empirical and conceptual manuscripts for 3 broadly defined tracks innovation management:

Track 1: NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
This track invites papers on research reflecting both traditional and newly emerging issues in the entire new product/service development chain from idea generation to development. Topics may include (but not limited to): research methods for discovering customer needs, the role of cross-functional teams, market and technology knowledge management, and organizational best practices in developing successful new products and services.

Track 2: MARKETING INNOVATION
Developing a new product is one thing but appropriating value is an entirely different matter. How do firms ensure effective value appropriation through marketing innovations? This track invites work dealing with the role of marketing strategies in creating and appropriating value in new product development. Papers covering all topics related (but not limited) to how firms develop and implement innovative and creative marketing strategies, new product marketing through strategic alliances, branding strategies, and strategic relationships with customers, competitors and other third parties.

Track 3: MANAGEMENT INNOVATION
Innovation is not only about new products and services. Companies such as Microsoft, GE and Toyota are well-known not only for product innovation but perhaps more importantly for innovations in management and organizational systems. Indeed, without such innovations new products are likely to fail. This track invites papers that examine innovation in its broadest sense. Topics may include (but not limited to) innovations in business models and process, factors that affect the adoption of new business practices, the role of management innovations in success of new products, how firms sustain competitive advantage through innovation; innovative competitive strategies; and building and sustaining company innovation culture.

Best Paper Awards
An award for best paper for each of the 3 tracks will be given and an outstanding paper, as determined by reviewers and the research Forum committee, will also be given.  The outstanding paper award includes a monetary award and a complimentary registration to the 2006 PDMA International Conference.
