HCR CONFERENCE
SYDNEY AUSTRALIA, JUNE 13-14 2006

"Turning consumer research on its head"

Please join us for the Heretical Consumer Research 2006 Conference. In the tradition of HCR, the conference will focus on alternative ways of understanding and representing consumption, markets and cultures. We also plan to capitalize on our location "down under" to question the underpinnings of some of our more closely held consumer research theories and turn them on their head. To that end, we are planning a conference that welcomes contentious issues and is full of debate.

We like to think of HCR as the anti-conference. Format wise, we will also be turning the conference institution on its head, and we will be having NO conference papers presented. Rather, the conference sessions will all utilize alternative formats, be as interactive as possible, and as heretical as possible. We welcome participants to submit ideas for sessions, which can include debates, panel discussions, poetry readings, films, plays, or any other stimulating medium for turning consumer research on its head. These sessions will be supplemented by conference activities designed to stimulate a heretical mindset, such as lawn bowling, consumer research trivia, and an evening of live alternative country music.

Overall, we plan to offer participants a unique perspective on consumer research, Sydney and Australian culture. Details are still to be confirmed but we already have plans to hold the conference in a heretical and typically Australian venue near the AGSM campus in Sydney. HCR will take place immediately before the Association for Consumer Research conference, also held in Sydney, beginning June 15. HCR conference co-chairs are Giana Eckhardt (gianae@agsm.edu.au) and Julien Cayla (julienc@agsm.edu.au).

The deadline for submitting your contribution is 1st of May 2006. This may be in the form of an abstract describing your idea, or simply a debate topic you would like to moderate and/or contribute to. Anything that helps to question the consumer research status quo is welcome. Please contact us even if you don’t plan to submit a presentation idea to let us know if you are planning on attending or not.

Feel free to email us with any questions as you are developing your topic or making your travel plans. We will provide full details concerning the schedule, accommodation, etc. in plenty of time for you to make your travel plans.

We hope to see you soon in Sydney!
