FAQs

This report used a modified Delphi process combined with elements from the Institute for the Future’s foresight methodology, bringing together over 30 marketing professionals from May to August 2025. The panelists, selected for their diverse expertise and backgrounds, participated in strategic foresight training, independently nominated trends, engaged in multiple rounds of voting and discussion, and examined future scenarios using the STEEP framework (considering social, technological, economic, environmental, and political factors). Throughout the process, they provided evidence-based insights to forecast how marketing might evolve over the next five to ten years, and what marketers and brands should do now to stay ahead.

The marketing trends were nominated and selected by a panel of volunteer marketing professionals. This Foresight Panel comprised marketing practitioners and thought leaders primarily from North America, with additional global representation. The 蹤獲扦夥厙 selected applicants based on their experience and expertise in marketing, with an emphasis on those in senior leadership roles. Selection decisions were also made with the goal of bringing together varied perspectives spanning multiple industries, personal backgrounds, functional specialties, company sizes, and employment contexts (in-house versus agency, B-to-B versus B-to-C). All panelists were practitioners working in or closely with marketing teams, and some also brought their perspective as academic researchers, marketing educators, and graduate marketing students. Panelists came from organizations such as Google, Densu, Ogilvy, Uber, NYU, and UNC Health. A full list of panelists with their affiliations is available in the downloadable report.

Jen OBrien, Director for Research and Innovation at the 蹤獲扦夥厙, was the lead researcher, panel facilitator, and report writer. Additional writing support came from Amy Gwiazdowski, VP of Communications at 蹤獲扦夥厙, and Latha Sarathy, Founder and CEO of SALIENT HQ.

Most trends reports aggregate survey data to surface what’s popular right now. The 蹤獲扦夥厙’s 2026 Future Trends in Marketing report takes another approach, and that’s by design. Rather than running a single survey and averaging the results, the 蹤獲扦夥厙 brought together more than 30 marketing professionals and trained them in strategic foresight methodology. Panelists were asked not just what they’re observing today, but which signals are already quietly reshaping the profession and what the marketing landscape might look like in five to ten years as those signals become the new norm.

Following them, in order, are the San Francisco Bay Area, Dallas, Miami, Chicago, Washington DC, and Atlanta.

Cost of Living

Many of the largest marketing hubs fall within this high-cost group. However, some key marketing cities offer more affordable living options. Chicago, Miami, and Atlanta are all among the top 10 cities by number of marketers from LinkedIn member data, but they rank between 10th and 20th in NUMBEOs living expense rankings. City Outlook

New York is by far the largest marketing hub in the U.S., with the most marketing businesses and career opportunities across industries like finance, fashion, and technology. However, the high cost of living and relatively low average salary for entry-level marketers can present a challenge to starting a career there.

Los Angeles ranks as the second-largest marketing hub. In 2025, the number of marketers is projected to be about half of New Yorks, but the business landscape remains vibrant, with around 70% as many small to mid-sized firms. Marketing professionals here are concentrated in entertainment, tech, and consumer goods, where theres high demand for roles in social media strategy and influencer marketing. While salaries arent the highest, living expenses are more modest than in New York or the Bay Area.

San Francisco is a tech-centered market for marketing professionals. Although it has fewer marketersroughly one-tenth the number in New Yorkthe combination of high salaries and a strong focus on tech offers solid opportunities for those with interdisciplinary skills. Digital analytics, UX marketing, and influencer partnerships are especially in demand. That said, San Francisco is also one of the most expensive cities in the country.

Chicago is a long-standing marketing hub with the third-largest base of marketing professionals, following New York and Los Angeles. It also has a strong business foundation, ranking third in the U.S. for both Fortune 500 headquarters and small to mid-sized businesses. The city supports a broad range of industriesincluding finance, manufacturing, tech, and food and beveragecreating demand for roles in digital analytics, brand management, and content creation. While Chicago may not offer the highest salaries, its relatively low cost of living makes it an attractive option for marketing professionals.

Dallas may not be the first city that comes to mind when talking about marketing, but it actually ranks as the fourth-largest city for marketers. It also has a strong business foundation, with 22 Fortune 500 companies headquartered there. At the same time, Dallas offers a more affordable cost of living compared to other major marketing hubs, ranking 24th in the U.S. Other cities in Texas like Austin and Houston show similar patterns: a solid number of marketing job opportunities and a strong business presence, paired with relatively low living costs and promising population growth.

A citys major industries, quality of life, and culture are also important factors to consider when choosing where to start your marketing career. In todays dynamic market, continuously developing in-demand skills and staying attuned to professional trends across cities can help you stand out and stay ahead.

The 2025 蹤獲扦夥厙 Marketing Skills Report identifies the skills required to thrive as a marketer today and in the future. Based on a survey of 1,200+ marketers, over 450 job postings and interviews with industry experts, this report lays out the new realities shaping the field of marketing—including the AI transformation, shifting consumer expectations and unprecedented changes to marketing channels—as well as the skills marketers will need to stay ahead.

Key Findings

  • In this age of automation, marketers who want to stay competitive should not lose sight of the importance of human skillsespecially communication, innovation and adaptability.
  • When it comes to job-specific skills, the largest current competency gaps are in digital marketing, data and analytics, proving ROI and data privacy and compliance. These are areas where marketers are not fully equipped to meet the demands of their roles today.
  • Marketers report a high level of uncertainty about how skills related to technology and channels will change over the coming years. This volatility is most apparent in AI, data privacy, search and social media.
  • Gen AI is the top rated future skill, with 43% of survey respondents predicting it will become more important in five years.
  • Data privacy is quickly rising in importance as a skill for marketers, driven by a wave of comprehensive state-based regulations and mounting consumer pressure.

Level Up Your Skills With the 蹤獲扦夥厙

蹤獲扦夥厙 offers training and certificates in the critical skills marketers need to advance and future-proof their careers. You can choose from a variety of in-person and online formats that fit your schedule.

FAQs

The 蹤獲扦夥厙 conducted this mixed-methods study drawing upon survey responses, job posting data, interviews with experts in the field, and secondary market data.

The research began with an analysis of more than 450 marketing job postings collected between February and August 2024, drawing from both Indeed and the 蹤獲扦夥厙.org job board. Textual analysis identified which skills appeared most frequently, which informed an updated skills list that reflects how the industry has changed since the 蹤獲扦夥厙’s previous study in 2021.

Before launching the survey, the questionnaire was tested through one-on-one interviews with professional marketers to ensure the language was clear and relevant. The survey was then distributed to 220,483 蹤獲扦夥厙 subscribers in August 2024, generating 1,279 responses from marketing practitioners, with a margin of error of 3% at a 95% confidence level.

Respondents spanned all levels of seniority, from specialists and coordinators to C-suite executives. Company sizes were also well represented, ranging from freelance marketers to organizations with more than 1,000 employees.

It is worth noting that the sample skews toward North American marketers, 蹤獲扦夥厙 members, mid-level managers, and those working at small companies, as well as professionals in sectors like higher education. These groups were over-represented relative to the broader marketing profession, which should be considered when interpreting the findings. More detailed information about the survey respondents is available in the full report.

The skills list was built from the ground up using real-world job market data rather than assumptions about what marketers need. The research team analyzed over 450 job postings and consulted secondary market sources to identify emerging skills that weren’t captured in the 蹤獲扦夥厙’s 2021 study.

This process resulted in meaningful updates to the skills included in the research. Some skills from 2021, such as podcasting and agile marketing, were removed. Newer capabilities, including data privacy and compliance and generative AI, were added to reflect where employer demand has shifted.

As the and industries, youre in a perfect position to start thinking about advancing your career with a digital marketing promotion. There are loads of opportunities out there, you only need to look at the job openings on LinkedIn to see how many!泭

But its also a competitive field as many people have realized that digital marketing skills can provide a career with , the chance to travel, and the opportunity to keep learning and growing.泭

So, how can you stand out from the crowd to get a digital marketing promotion in your current job, or in that company youve been stalking online? Here are 8 great and simple ways to get you one step closer to that dream career.

Build Your Personal Brand

First and foremost, you need to have a presence online to show you can communicate online. This means you need to build a brand that demonstrates your skills and aptitudes, but also your personality.

If youre looking for a promotion, cultivate a presence that shows off your professional skills and personal values. So, how can you build a brand for yourself?

  • Whats Your Unique Selling Point? – Everyone has something unique about them. Maybe you write fiction as a hobby, can play the violin, or love skydiving. Show off what makes you, you. Ultimately thats why your employer will choose you above other candidates when it comes to a promotion or career move.
  • Choose Your Digital Channels – Like a business, you need to be shrewd about the digital channel you choose. Time is precious so concentrate on the ones that will help you get noticed. LinkedIn is a great platform for connecting with people in your industry and also showcasing any campaigns or work youre involved in. If you love video, maybe TikTok is the platform for your skills. Just be aware of remaining professional online as it can be seen if an employer searches for you.
  • Choose Side Projects Carefully – Maybe youre involved in a podcast or guest blog. If so, be choosy about who you do things for as it will reflect on you as a person. It doesnt have to be about digital marketing, but it should be something you are passionate about.
  • Be Authentic & Open – The most successful influencers or bloggers are seen as authentic. They remain true to themselves and continue that across online channels. Think about your USP and ethos and show that online in a genuine way.
  • Watch, Listen & Learn – In this sector, its easy to find out about trends and industry insights. Subscribe to a YouTube channel you like, listen to digital marketing podcasts or just follow industry leaders on social media. That way, you will learn new things and be able to bring them to your role and workplace to impress.

Develop new skills

If you want to advance in your role or move up the ladder, you must refresh existing skills and develop new ones. The digital marketing landscape is constantly changing so you need to keep on top of developments that can enhance your chances at earning your marketing promotion.

For example, if you work in social media you should be aware of algorithm changes, analytic updates, and new features on the platforms. Or if you work in content marketing, understand how SEO can enhance your copy and traffic volumes or see if AI can help in your copywriting.

Theres always something to learn, so its about focusing on an area youre weak in or would like to learn more about. Short courses at the end are a great way to demonstrate knowledge, or if you want to immerse yourself in a new area of digital marketing, sign up for an intensive online course you can do in your own time.

Use Social Media

Social media is everywhere and social networking is one of the most popular activities online. Its so popular that 57 percent of the worlds population will use it by 2025 .

Bar graph showing increase of social network penetration around the world from 2017 and into 2025.

To boost your personal brand, social media is invaluable. It offers you the opportunity to post about issues youre interested in (such as social issues) or updates on digital marketing or the digital sector. Resharing and commenting on other peoples posts is a great way to make connections and network with peers.

But dont spread yourself too thin, there are a finite number of hours in the day, so choose platforms that suit your content and style. For example, Twitter is a great platform if youre interested in news or want to follow things in real-time (plus for any business). Whereas Instagram is great if you make videos or take a lot of photographs.泭

Don’t be afraid to try a new platform if you think it may work for your content or want to connect with people. Its easy to set up an account and start posting.

Start a blog

A great way to raise your online profile and get in line for that promotion is to start a blog. This allows you to share your views with a wider audience and convey your personality.

If you want to start a blog, follow these 4 simple steps:

  1. Figure out what to write about – Its always better to focus on something specific or niche rather than just talking about every issue or topic. That way people will visit your blog to get an opinion on a specific area. If thats in the realm of digital marketing, even better!
  2. Choose a name – Just like a social media handle, your blog name should be something that stands out or relates to you. If youre being tactical, do some keyword research and include a relevant keyword in the title, and choose a .com domain if possible.
  3. Find a platform – There are lots of platforms out there so do your research and find one that is easy to use. WordPress is popular as is Wix or HubSpot. You should also look at hosting capabilities as you will want to be able to just plug and play e.g. choose a theme and get writing!
  4. Create content – Decide what type of content you want to create and get started. It could be short articles, checklists, or listicles. Its really up to you.

If starting a blog seems too much, reach out to other bloggers to see if you can write a guest blog. Or you can post articles on LinkedIn or the publishing platform, .

Think about soft skills

Employers today want employees with knowledge but also soft skills (behaviors, personality traits, and work habits) that help people flourish at work.

According to The Future of Work 2022, the most important soft skills employers want today are teamwork/collaboration, communication, and problem-solving/critical thinking. Its these soft skills that employers believe will enable a long career as it shows a willingness to adapt, change and pitch in when needed.

If you want a promotion, its wise to demonstrate that you have these skills. Look for ways that you can collaborate with your team or another department. If youre in meetings are you speaking up or communicating the work you are doing, or do you have any ideas that could improve productivity or boost digital marketing campaigns?

Its the small things you do daily in the company and your team that will make a difference. If you lack these skills then be more aware of your surroundings and interactions with people. Having an open mind and being adaptable will help you build relationships and boost your career prospects.

Learn from your mistakes

It can be hard to hear criticism in the workplace. It can affect your morale and impact your productivity. However, there is a plus side to professional critique – it can help you improve on areas that you could be weak in which may help you land that marketing promotion.

In the early stages of a career, there will be people with more experience than you. Plus, you are learning on the job so there will be mistakes or errors, and remember, everyone has made mistakes at some point.

The main thing is how you deal with and learn from those mistakes. Owning up to your mistake shows a strength of character and a willingness to rectify it and move on. Its that agility and resilience that employers look for and appreciate as part of a team. In the long run, it will put you in a good position for any future promotion.

Hone your CV

When youre looking for a promotion, your CV is crucial. Its what employers look at to make a judgment on whether you will fit the role they are looking to fill.

No matter what stage youre at in your digital marketing career, you should always review your CV before sending it out. Here are a few tips to make an impactful CV:

  • Put yourself in your employers shoes – If youre going for a promotion in your existing company, then you have an advantage. You know what its like to work there and understand the values and goals of the company. So think about what your boss or senior management is looking for. If its a new company, get online and do your research. Comb through annual reports, read blogs, or get a feel for their interests and tone on social media.
  • Showcase your practical skills – As weve said, soft skills are crucial, so look at instances where you have used communication, adaptability, or critical thinking. It doesn’t necessarily have to be at work, but it does need to show you applying practical skills to a situation.
  • Outline your uniqueness – There is nobody else like you, so let your employer know whats unique about you. Include your interests or a short bio that encapsulates who you are.
  • Include analytics – As a digital marketer, you know how important analytics are. If youve been involved in campaigns, social media posting or content development, what impact did that have in terms of leads, views or sales? Employers want to see the results of your work, so include them where you can.
  • Show your alignment with the company – Companies want to hire someone thats happy in their job and willing to stay. So they are looking for candidates that are a good fit. It could be your values or commitment to a sector e.g. charity or FMCG that make you stand out.

Network, network & network

In any career you’re looking to grow in, networking plays a crucial role. Networking can lead you to opportunities and connections you may not have come across otherwise.

Networking is not an A to B plan, its something you need to do continuously to advance your career. We already mentioned social media, particularly LinkedIn as a great place to connect with peers or experts in your area. But thats not the only place.

Events and conferences gather like-minded people together so offer great opportunities to network. Events or fireside chats can improve your understanding of digital marketing areas such as analytics, social media or SEO. You should attend events in other areas as what you learn may prove beneficial in a way you never expected.

To advance your career, you need to put in some thought, time, and effort. These 8 tips should help you to build your personal brand and make an impact in your current role that will help you land that promotion. Good luck!

Every marketer knows that a great marketing strategy begins as a plan. You do a lot of hard work identifying your target audience, where they spend time, how to reach them, and communicating to them that they need or want your product or service. A marketing framework takes all this hard work you did and puts it together in one visual place so that you can share it with others on your team or at your company and make it much easier to execute. There are several different types of marketing frameworks. We will tell you about some popular marketing framework examples and how to choose the best one for your business.

Refresh Your Digital Marketing Skills

What is a Marketing Framework?

You wouldnt start building a house without a blueprint, would you? Well, your market framework is the blueprint of your marketing strategy. So, before you sit down to create your marketing strategy, consider your marketing framework. The marketing framework is the visual representation of how marketing gets done in your business. It details how you will execute your marketing plan and deliver your content to your audience. Sometimes, it is called the marketing strategy framework.

The Benefits of a Marketing Strategy Framework

A marketing framework is meant to help your marketing team function at its highest level. There are several benefits to creating a marketing framework, including:

  • Improving the overall marketing strategy, which in turn benefits the growth and success of your company
  • Keeping you and your team focused and on the same page
  • Creating a home for all the templates, guides, tools, and assets that make your marketing strategy and everyone on your team might need to access
  • Establishes approved verbiage used by the organization throughout packaging, social media, newsletters, etc.
  • Allows you to clearly communicate and designate roles and responsibilities for various team members, or transfer people between roles if necessary
  • Saves time by making expectations clear and avoiding redos or errors

Different Types of Marketing Framework Models

Over time, many marketing frameworks models have been developed. The following are a few of the most common and popular examples of marketing frameworks:

The 7Ps Marketing Mix

Perhaps the widely used marketing framework is the . It is popular because it helps you analyze and optimize every facet of your business to ensure success, whether you are just starting a new company or simply want to evaluate your current process and optimize campaign performance.

The 7Ps include:

  • Product: What you are selling.
  • Price: How much the product costs.
  • Place: Where the product is sold.
  • Promotion: How you share your product with your audience.
  • People: Who is involved in the production, promotion, and distribution of your product.
  • Process: How the product is delivered to the customer.
  • Physical Evidence: How you prove to customers that your business exists.

The STP Marketing Model

In STP, S stands for segmentation, which is dividing your audience into different sections; T stands for targeting, which is determining who will want or need your product the most; and positioning, how you make that product the most appealing to your target audience.

The that focuses on getting highly personalized and applicable information to an extremely targeted audience. If your product is fairly specific, this might be the right marketing framework example for you to use.

Porters Five Forces

Many marketing frameworks focus mostly on the product or service and/or the target customers, but . It looks mostly at the outside factors that could affect the success of your business, including:

  • Supplier Power: This includes how many other suppliers exist, what differentiates them from yours, and the cost of their product compared to yours.
  • Buyer Power: This is the customers ability to influence decisions made by the company.
  • Threat of Substitution: This compares your product to the others on the market.
  • Threat of New Entry: What barriers might you face entering the market?
  • Competitive Rivalry: What are some other outside factors that might affect how your product performs compared to the competition?

Pirate Metrics (AARRR)

This is one of the more modern marketing frameworks and works especially well for e-commerce businesses. (Dont worry, there is no need to set sail!) and shows you how customers travel along their buying journeys and which areas might use some improvement. Lets break down AARRR:

  • Acquisition: This is how leads find you. You might use website visitor tracking to determine how your audience is arriving at your site. Is it via search engines, , a blog, an influencer, etc.?
  • Activation: This is the step the lead took once they arrived at your website. It might be giving you their email address in exchange for a discount on their first purchase, signing up for an account, etc.
  • Retention: Once that lead leaves your site, do they return? How often?
  • Revenue: How do you earn money from your clients? You can review data like conversion rates, shopping cart abandonment or size, and the customer lifetime value.
  • Referral: When customers are happy with your product or service, they will tell other people, and this means more customers. This is great for business because it means you have to spend less money attracting new customers via marketing campaigns.

How to Choose the Best Marketing Model for Your Business

There is no one best marketing framework that will fit every business. The right marketing framework for your business depends on you, the marketer, your target audience, your product or service, and other factors, including:

  • Your business goals
  • The role of marketing within your company
  • How you define and measure the success of your marketing campaigns
  • The capabilities of your marketing department
  • Areas where marketing is most necessary in your company

The best marketing framework for your company might be one of the examples mentioned above, a combination of them all, one we didnt include here, or even one you create yourself! The important thing is finding a marketing framework that fits your business.

Do you hope to someday take on the role of the CMO? The CMO, or chief marketing officer, is the highest-level marketing position that you can attain while working for a company. CMOs have been the topic of many discussions in recent years due to their growing popularity. Companies and corporations recognize the importance of marketing and the role of marketers has grown within many businesses. Whether you are simply curious about the role of the CMO or aspire to be a CMO yourself, we will tell you everything you need to know about the role of the chief marketing officer in the corporate world.

Level Up Your Managing Skills

What Is a CMO?

CMO stands for chief marketing officer. It is the highest-level marketing position in a company. A CMO is an important part of any company and determines the brands direction and marketing strategy and leads the marketing team.

A which is the blanket term that refers to all the corporate executive positions with the world chief in their job title. For example, some other C-suite positions are chief executive officer and chief financial officer. The CMO works closely with the other C-suite positions.

What Is the Difference Between the Role of the CMO and a Marketing Director?

There are a lot of marketing job titles out there, from marketing assistant to digital marketing manager and even brand ambassador. So, how does a chief marketing officer differ from other common marketing leadership positions? A CMO differs from the title of marketing director or marketing manager. Though a CMO may have many of the same responsibilities as a marketing director, marketing manager or other high-level marketing position, a CMO is an executive who will need to keep pace with the other C-executives.

What are the Responsibilities of a CMO?

The role and responsibilities of a CMO can vary, depending on the executive, the industry, the size of their team, etc. However, generally, the chief marketing officer is primarily responsible for driving revenue by increasing sales through marketing activities. The following are some of the typical responsibilities of a CMO:

Create and Implement Marketing Campaigns

The primary responsibility of a CMO is to develop and execute successful marketing campaigns. Typically, a marketing campaign begins with a particular tone or message that they want to communicate about a brand, or a new product or service launch. Then, the CMO will work with their team to .

Oversee Market Research and Analyze Metrics

One of the most important aspects of a marketing campaign is reaching consumers in the correct target market. CMOs conduct or oversee market research and data analysis regarding their target audience, the custom experience and sales funnel, and market and industry trends to determine the best way to reach their audience – and make sales.

Oversee All PR and Public-Facing Communication

Many CMOs closely supervise all of the companys public relations efforts, including any public-facing communications or messages from the brand. This includes social media accounts, email marketing, newsletters, web pages, and print publications. The job of the chief marketing officer is to ensure that all these communications are on brand and aligned with the current marketing campaign.

Work Closely With Other C-Suite Positions

The CMO also collaborates frequently with the other C-level executives in the company, such as the CEO (chief executive officer), CIO (chief information officer), COO (chief operating officer), CPO (chief product officer), and CFO (chief financial officer.) These roles frequently work together to make important decisions related to product pricing, new product and service development, and the brands direction, goals, and progress.

What Qualifications are Necessary to Become a CMO?

Are you wondering, How can I become a CMO? While every chief marketing officer will take their own unique career path, there are several different high-level requirements in order to reach the elite position of chief marketing officer at most companies:

Education

At a minimum, most CMO positions will require that a candidate has a bachelors degree in business administration, business development, marketing, or a related field. (Keep in mind, however, that it is possible to work in marketing without a marketing degree!) Chief marketing officer positions at high-profile companies might also require additional education, like an MBA degree, other relevant masters degrees, or an additional business certification, like Certified Marketing Management Professional or Professional Certified Marketer.

Experience

As you may have guessed, CMO is not exactly an entry-level position. The role comes with a lot of responsibilities, so typically the chief marketing officer job description will require a minimum of 10 years of experience in marketing departments. Ideally, at least half that time will be spent in some kind of leadership role. Potential employers love to see the effects of your efforts: for example, have your marketing skills demonstrably increased sales for your previous employer or company? (If you want to improve your resume, this is a great fact to add!)

Technical Skills

Any CMO must have knowledge and understanding of several different technical skills relating to marketing. Some of these might include design software, search engine optimization, email servers and programs, social media channels lead generation and sales management tech, and CRMs (customer relationship management software.)

Leadership and Communication Skills

An excellent CMO will always have excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. These talents are all important for leading their marketing teams, solving conflicts, motivating their employees, and working well with the other high-level executives at the company.

The Role of the CMO in Corporate Culture

The chief marketing officer is a relatively new role in the corporate world. As of 2019, there were more than .
