The venerable ELMAR job submission form, in use since 2009, opened an eye one morning a few days ago, took a quick look around, and decided to stop working. When I first discovered this, for a while at least, I was confident I could fix it in a few minutes. That sorely misplaced confidence slowly became an ever more feeble, flickering, frail hope that I could get it done before the heat death of the universe. Not wanting to wait even half that long, I have decided to modernize things and have therefore set up a Google form for job posts.

I have updated the How to Post item under the ELMAR ADMIN drop down on our beloved Web site:

/listings/2020/02/22/how-to-post-2/

The new form is located here:

It is possible I missed some places where the old form is still being publicized, and I would surely appreciate it if you would draw those to my attention.

In the mean time, if you attempted to post a job notice in the past 10 days or so, I am afraid you will have to redo it, using the URL above. If you are not sure your job got posted, all jobs are listed here

/listing-types/jobs/

in chronological order. I do apologize if this caused problems.

Given the sudden disappearance of the beloved old form, it might be the case that things will change one more time in the next month or so.  If that is the case, I will do my best to make the transition somewhat more elegant that this time.

Apology for Unsolicited Emails /listings/2025/05/20/apology-for-unsolicited-emails/ Tue, 20 May 2025 06:52:13 +0000 /?post_type=ama_listing&p=195237 Some ELMAR subscribers may have received unsolicited emails starting in November. That is now no longer the case.

There has been a technical error – not a purposeful act – that has affected some ELMAR subscribers. The error occurred in November, when some subscribers began to receive unsolicited non-ELMAR announcements from the on their email address used for ELMAR. Those emails have now stopped.

Since I have my own, shall we call them “technical means”, of checking on such things, I really should have caught this immediately. Yet I did not notice the error until six months had passed. As such I feel the need to add a personal apology to this note.

Precious little trust remains with respect to software-based platforms and at some level I hate to contribute to further erosion of that trust. On the other hand, given the number, scope and scale of these platforms perhaps trust was never the appropriate response.

Recent Job Posting Glitch /listings/2024/01/30/recent-job-posting-glitch/ Tue, 30 Jan 2024 06:56:25 +0000 /?post_type=ama_listing&p=146175 Some recent attempts to post job notices vanished rather than being automatically forwarded to me

It has come to my attention that some recent attempts to post job notices vanished rather than being forwarded to me.

The job posting process depends on some code I wrote 22 years ago, although it seems like merely 21 years ago subjectively speaking. The realization that the program had broken provoked strong negative emotion in me, but perhaps here I was implicitly blaming “R2” despite the fact that he or she had never laid eyes on the thing. I finally chilled and thereby came to accept three things about the universe. The universe is subject to (1) the Second Law of Thermodynamics, (2) incessant bombardment by cosmic rays, and tellingly, (3) Murphy’s Law. So I took a deep breadth, dodged a ray, and fixed the darn thing.

The upshot is that if you have recently attempted to post a job notice on ELMAR, and said notice failed to appear on the next Wednesday mailout, feel free to redo the submission.

Look out for those rays and check here for ELMAR posting instructions.

ELMAR and Predatory Publishers

For the purposes of this note, I will define a predatory journal or publisher following Grudniewicz et al. (2019):

“Predatory journals and publishers are entities that prioritize self-interest at the expense of scholarship and are characterized by false or misleading information, deviation from best editorial and publication practices, a lack of transparency, and/or the use of aggressive and indiscriminate solicitation practices.”

It has come to my attention that I have posted some special issue calls from a publisher who would seem to be predatory according to the above definition. As such, I now believe these posts were a mistake on my part and I have deleted them. The publisher in question is identified by name in Oviedo-García (2021).

I welcome conversation and engagement in general on the topic of predatory publishers so, as usual, feel free to drop me a line. In fact, my realization followed an email conversation with a PhD student who reached out to me last week.
