You probably already know that there’s a Google algorithm, governing how the world’s leading search engine returns its results. It’s the search giant’s secret sauce, locked in a black box. But did you know that the decisions made about what appears on those SERPs (search engine results pages) are partly made by a series of sub-algorithms that have been added over the years?

RankBrain, introduced in 2015, is a key component of Google’s search engine. It uses machine learning, a form of artificial intelligence, to interpret search queries, understand context, and deliver highly relevant search results. RankBrain excels at deciphering the millions of diverse, complex searches made each day, many of which Google’s system has never encountered before.

Its role in Google Search is substantial, acting as the silent gatekeeper of the internet’s vast repository of information. If we can get it to refine and re-order those search results in our favor, the traffic gains could be huge.

So how do we make those apparently small improvements that yield such massive gains? Well there are two key metrics that RankBrain rewards, and they both stem from the reason RankBrain was created in the first place – to give searchers the most useful content.

1. Optimize Title Tags: Title tags should be relevant, compelling, and include your target keyword where possible. Adding emotional triggers can also increase CTR.

2. Use Numbers and Brackets in Titles: According to a study by HubSpot and Outbrain, headlines with numbers and brackets outperform those without by 33%. 

3. Optimize Meta Descriptions: While meta descriptions don’t directly impact SEO rankings, they can boost your CTR. Make sure your meta description clearly explains why someone should click on your result, includes your target keyword, and uses other search intent trigger words to help it stand out.

Boosting Dwell Time

Dwell time is the amount of time a user spends on your page after clicking on your listing on the SERP. The longer the dwell time, the better, as it signals to Google that users find your content valuable. Here are some strategies to increase dwell time:

1. Create Engaging, Above-The-Fold Content: The first piece of content users see when they visit your website is crucial. Make sure it’s engaging and relevant to the user’s search query.

2. Write Compelling Introductions: Good introductions hook the reader and tell them exactly what they’re about to get. This goes back to search intent.

3. Cover the Topic Thoroughly: Ensure your content provides a comprehensive answer to the user’s query. Leaving no missing pieces increases the likelihood that users will stay on your page longer.

4. Add a Personal Touch: Sharing personal experiences or insights can help build trust with your audience and make your content more engaging.

To start, pinpoint the pages on your website that are within the ‘striking distance’ of ranking higher in search results. These are the pages that are close to securing a prominent position but require some optimization. By identifying these pages, you can focus your efforts on maximizing their potential and increasing their visibility.

To find these candidate pages:

  1. Log in to

  3. Sort by impressions to see the biggest queries you rank for
  4. Look for queries where you rank between 8th and 20th place
  5. Search those queries to see how you look on those SERPs
